If you have ever considered pursuing a career as a voice actor, then you’re definitely going to want to check out these tips. Over the past few years, voice acting has become quite popular- especially since people are able to create their demo discs in the comfort of their own homes.
If you want to get a leg up on the competition, and you’re ready to start doing some voice acting auditions, make sure to keep these tips in mind, as they are the “spit and polish” that a voice client is looking for.
Don’t Cold Read
You should never attempt to do a cold read. Always take the time to review your part before you go on an audition. After all, it’s really easy to end up stumbling over the words and tripping yourself up.
One of the easiest, but best voice acting tips you can follow is to take a few minutes, sit back, and take the time to read through the script a few times before you record anything.
Take Your Time
For some reason, voice actors typically make this mistake. They will end up getting in a hurry when, in their minds, they are taking their time and the copy is flowing smoothly. Of course, you don’t want to drag things out- but you don’t want to end up sounding like you just sucked down a can of helium either. Remember to relax- and breathe.
Enunciate Your Words
If you have a habit of mumbling and not enunciating your words, your audition will end up coming across as muffled and garbled. You should always make sure that you speak clearly and properly pronounce your words. This will make a huge difference in the way that you sound on your recording.
Avoid Weird Noises
If you typically make a “pop” sound when you pronounce something with a “P”, you “hiss” when you pronounce the letter “S”, or you just breathe heavy sometimes, it’s a good idea to invest in an inexpensive microphone screen to reduce some of this excess noise in your recording. If you don’t have the extra cash to invest, you can use a pair of pantyhose slipped over your microphone as a temporary fix.
Don’t Eat the Microphone
Keep in mind that it’s a microphone- it’s not a lollipop. While it’s true that you see rock stars doing it all the time, it’s a good idea if you can avoid eating the microphone. You don’t want to stand too far away from it either. Make sure that you are showing respect to the microphone and you’re giving it some space.
Know the Character
When you are doing a reading for a voice acting gig, you want to also do what you can to get into character. You don’t want to sound monotonous- like you’re simply reading a script. Instead, you want the listener to feel like he or she is experiencing the character you’re reading. You must believe in your character before you can make others believe.
Tidy Up Your Recording
Once you have created your demo or audition tape, it’s a good idea to clean it up a bit. This means that you need to take the time to edit out any sounds of breathing or background noise at the beginning or end of your recording. You should make it sound sharp and professional.
Drop the Ego
While this is one of the simplest and easiest to follow voice acting tips, it is unfortunately the one that is often overlooked. No matter how good you are- or how good you think you are- there is no client that will enjoy working with a prima donna.
Maintain Maturity and Professionalism
When you’re reading the demo, don’t make any changes to the script- adding to or taking away from. Read it just as it was given to you. In addition, unless you were instructed to, you should never read your contact info on the demo. On the other hand, you should put your info on all of the written documentation.
Don’t be Discouraged
Even if you do get a rejection letter/call or you don’t get any callback for a particular audition, one of the best things you can do is to be determined and don’t give up. The career of a voice actor is quite challenging, but if you are willing to stick it out, the rewards of doing something that you love is worth it.
If you want to pursue a career as a voice actor, you need to keep these tips in mind. There is so much competition, but there is also so much potential too.
